A healthy and well maintained aquarium can provide beauty, relaxation, education, and enjoyment to your home or office. Quality Aquatic carries all the accessories and supplies you need to maintain your aquarium. Here are few of the things to think about when setting up your new aquarium.
Aquarium Size A recommended size for freshwater is at least a 10 gallon tank, and 29 gallons for a saltwater tank. Bigger is always better if you have the means, when you have a small volume of water, important water parameters change very quickly leaving no room for mistakes, so the bigger the tank, the less impact a mistake will have on your fish.
You need to think about where your aquarium is going, and if you need a stand. If you are planning on using an existing piece of furniture you own, it needs to be sturdy, also keep in mind it may get wet sometimes.
Lighting There are many available types of light that you can use for your tank, the type of light you need is based on what you want to keep in your tank. Most aquariums come with a fluorescent light and hood that work well for fish. If you are planning on having aquatic plants, corals, or anemones you may need to look into something else.
Substrate For a tropical aquarium use sand or gravel, some fish prefer one over the other, so if there is a fish you really want to have in your aquarium, make sure they will be alright with what you choose.
Filtration There are many types of filters. When buying a filter look at how much flow (Gallons-Per-Hour, GPH) the filter has, you want the filter to have a GPH rating at least two times the size of your aquarium. There is more information on types of filtration in the filters category.
Temperature Tropical aquarium temperature ranges from 76 to 79 degrees and cold-water (freshwater) fish prefer a range between 50 and 70 degrees. You will need to work with using heaters, chillers, and timing of your lights to keep the temperature of your aquarium stable.
These are just a few of the things to think about when starting a new aquarium! You can read more detailed information about supplies and equipment in the product categories.
