A chiller is a machine that removes heat from a liquid via a vapor-compression or absorption refrigeration cycle.
Drop-In Chillers - A probe is placed directly into wet/dry filters or any filter with a sump, they are primarily used with saltwater reef setups. No plumbing is required which makes them ideal for systems with limited space.
In-Line Chillers - Intended for use on larger systems with in-line filtration. Water is pumped into the chiller, cooled and then returned to the tank or sump. These chillers do require plumbing and should be incorporated into the overall aquarium plan prior to execution. One advantage of an in-line chiller is that it can be setup away from the tank.
