Regular Fluorescent Light - These type of lights are very affordable and usually come in starter aquariums. They usually range from 15 to 40 watts and have a Kelvin range from 3,000 to 10,000. They are very affordable to run and replace.
Compact Fluorescent Light Bulb - These lights usually have a Kelvin range from 10 to 100 watts and have Kelvin range or 5,000 to 10,000. These lights offer a bright and intense light but they do put off some heat that may raise the tank water temperature. Running power compact lights require special hoods, and often come with installed fans in to keep your aquarium cool.
High Output (HO) Fluorescent Light - HO fluorescent lights usually range from 20-60 watts and have a Kelvin range of 6,000 to 11,000. They are more expensive than regular fluorescents and usually last longer. These require a T5 fixture.
Very High Output (VHO) Fluorescent - VHO fluorescent lights typically range from 75-160 watts and have a Kelvin range of 10,000 to 20,000. These lights are more expensive and produce a lot of heat. They may require a ballast or special fixture, fans are incorporated into the lighting unit for keeping a cool aquarium and lights. You may need to add a chiller to prevent your aquarium from overheating.
Full Spectrum or Daylight Lamps - These lamps try to closely imitate the look of natural sunlight. They provide a wide spectrum of red, blue, green, and yellow. They are a good choice for most aquariums and are also used alongside the Actinic bulbs in saltwater aquariums. Full spectrum and Daylight bulbs offer a natural appearance and are a good source of light for freshwater plants.
Actinic Lamps - Blue light travels deeper into the water than the other colors in the light spectrum. These bulbs produce only the blue end of the spectrum and may cast a bluish tint. Actinic lamps are recommended for deep water invertebrates, and fish that don't like bright light. They should be used in conjunction with other full spectrum bulbs. You can also create a dusk and dawn simulation in your aquarium, providing your inhabitants with a more realistic sunrise and sunset.
