Even with regular maintenance you may still have an outbreak of disease in your aquarium. You want to take care of this as quickly as possible to avoid further problems. Here are some of the more common diseases.

Ich (White Spot) is one of the most common. It is caused by poor water quality or stressed out fish with weakened immune systems. If caught in time it can be treated easily and there are medications out for Ich.

Small white spots resembling sand
Fish will scratch against rock and gravel
Heavy breathing
Advanced stages your fish will become lethargic
Advanced stages can create redness or bloody streaks on your fish

Fungal Infections can look like gray/white cottony patches on your fish's skin or gills, it is caused by large amounts of decaying matter in the tank. It can be easily cleared up with treatments, keeping up on tank maintenance will help prevent this.

Flukes are the name for various parasites that can be diagnosed and treated the same way. Flukes symptoms are similar ti Ich.

Tail & Fin Rot is a disease caused by bacteria in aquariums. It is when the fins or tail start to rot off. This can also be caused by injuries or other fish nipping or bullying the fish, which weakens the fish and allows for fin rot to infect them. To prevent this, keep a clean aquarium, keep your fish healthy, and keep fish that get along well.
