A heater is needed if you plan to have a successful aquarium and keep its temperature right for the type of fish you have, because temperature variations cause stress to your fish. The most popular and efficient type of heaters are the submersible kind.

Heaters will usually have a built-in thermostat to select the temperature for your aquarium, you should still use a thermometer to monitor the temperature of the water. A temperature controller is another option for keeping a stable environment in your aquarium.
