 Aquariums using a sump, filtration, refugium, aeration, or water circulation setup requires some type of plumbing.
Plumbing Connectors
- Slip - Smooth interior and exterior and are used to permanently connect PVC tubing.
- Insert (barbed) - Barbs on the outside to provide a watertight connection with flexible tubing
- Threaded - Threads on the interior and are screwed directly on to the circulation pump to attach tubing or other connectors
- Union - Provide a quick watertight connection that is easy to disconnect.
- Ball valves - Placed in-line after the pump to give control over pump flow rate, they allow you to shut-off or bypass water flow.
Soft Plumbing
Is a system using flexible vinyl tubing, clamps, and barbed fittings. They are easier to install and disconnect. They allow easy maintenance and don't require the use of elbows which can restrict flow rates.
Hard Plumbing
This system uses PVC piping that is threaded together or glued with slip fittings. They are not as easy and take much longer to disconnect. PVC piping must be cut in order to be changed or replaced. This method is more stable and best for setups with high flow rates and water pressure.
